Direct answer

Start with the Cave of Knowledge tutorial, activate nearby Sites of Grace, collect the local map fragment, follow the Guidance of Grace until Melina unlocks leveling, and upgrade one weapon before spreading resources across multiple experiments.

Quick steps

  1. 01
Complete the Cave of Knowledge so the combat prompts are stored in the Inventory's Info tab.
  2. 02
Activate Sites of Grace and pick up the regional map fragment before attempting a long detour.
  3. 03
Follow the golden Guidance of Grace until Melina offers an accord and unlocks rune leveling.
  4. 04
Choose one usable weapon, meet its attribute requirements and improve it before funding a second weapon.
  5. 05
If an enemy defeats you repeatedly, mark the location, recover runes safely and explore another route.

Do the tutorial and preserve the instructions

The Cave of Knowledge teaches guarding, dodging, skills and other basic actions in a controlled space. Bandai Namco also notes that tutorial messages remain available under Inventory and Info, so a missed prompt does not require restarting.

Finishing the tutorial does not lock you into a class or permanent route. The starting class is an initial distribution of equipment and attributes, not a final build.

Build a reliable exploration loop

Touch every Site of Grace you pass, inspect the map at each fragment marker and use map markers for bosses, merchants and blocked routes. Guidance of Grace points toward major objectives, but the open world allows a temporary retreat when the direct path is too hard.

Spend carried runes before testing an unknown dungeon or field boss. A death leaves them at the place of defeat, and a second death before recovery loses that pile.

  • Grace: checkpoint, recovery and route anchor.
  • Map fragment: reveals the region's map drawing.
  • Marker: records a return task that the game will not solve for you.
  • Retreat: a valid progression choice, not a failed run.

Unlock leveling and improve one dependable tool

Melina's accord enables rune spending for attribute levels. Raise the attributes your chosen weapon actually requires, then improve survivability and the resource used by your playstyle instead of distributing points evenly.

Weapon upgrades, flask improvements and Spirit Ash upgrades can create more immediate progress than repeating the same fight unchanged. Read each upgrade screen before spending limited materials.

Failure diagnosis

If attacks bounce off a shield, use guard-breaking options, skills or a different angle. If stamina is empty, stop attacking early enough to defend. If damage is very low, verify weapon requirements and upgrade level. If an area kills you in one or two hits, explore another branch and return with more health, upgrades and flask charges.
