Direct answer

Elden Ring combat is an exchange-management problem: keep enough stamina to defend, use target lock when it helps camera control, punish a committed enemy with a guard counter or jump attack, and spend FP on a skill only when the opening is safe.

Quick steps

  1. 01
Lock on for a single mobile target; unlock when the camera or a group makes the lock harmful.
  2. 02
End an attack sequence with stamina remaining for one defensive action.
  3. 03
After blocking a clear final hit, use the heavy-attack input for a guard counter.
  4. 04
Use jump attacks, charged attacks or guard counters to pressure an enemy's stance.
  5. 05
Read the weapon skill and FP cost before replacing the skill with an Ash of War.

Stamina is the real turn limit

Attacks, blocks, dodges and sprinting all compete for stamina. Emptying the bar on offense removes the answer to the enemy's next action, so a shorter sequence that preserves one dodge is often safer than a full combo.

Lower the shield or create distance when it is safe so stamina can recover. Holding guard continuously can turn a manageable exchange into a guard break.

Choose the correct defensive response

A shield can absorb a known physical strike, a dodge can avoid damage when timed through an attack, and spacing can make an attack miss without spending a block. No single response is correct for every damage type or enemy sequence.

A guard counter follows a successful block with a heavy attack. It is a punish, not invulnerability: do not use it in the middle of a longer enemy combination.

  • Block: reliable when shield reduction and stamina are sufficient.
  • Dodge: timing-dependent and useful against attacks a shield handles poorly.
  • Guard counter: use after the last safe blocked hit.
  • Parry: requires compatible equipment and timing; some bosses need more than one parry before a critical opening.

Break stance before chasing damage

Charged heavy attacks, jump attacks, guard counters and some skills are useful for stance pressure. When an enemy collapses, move to the visible critical position rather than continuing a random combo.

Stance values and exact thresholds differ by enemy and version. This guide does not invent universal counts.

Skills, FP and troubleshooting

Weapon skills consume FP unless their description says otherwise. Verify which skill is equipped, whether the weapon is being held correctly and whether the required FP remains before treating an input as broken.

If a parry never triggers, confirm the shield or weapon actually carries a parry skill. If guard counters are interrupted, wait for a clearer final hit. If the camera fights the player, release target lock and reposition.
