GTA 6 editions and pre-order terms

Rockstar currently offers Standard and Ultimate. The important differences are the bundled story items, digital-only Ultimate format, code-in-box retail copy and account-region rules.

Short answer

Choose Standard if you only need the game; choose Ultimate if you specifically value its listed story items. Standard owners can buy the Ultimate Edition Upgrade later, so the premium is not a now-or-never decision.

EditionsStandard · Ultimate

The two editions listed by Rockstar.

Ultimate formatDigital only

No physical Ultimate Edition is listed.

Retail boxDownload code

The Standard box does not contain a disc.

Upgrade laterYes

Available after the Standard code is redeemed.

Standard Edition versus Ultimate Edition

Standard

The complete game

Includes Grand Theft Auto VI. It is sold digitally and as a retail box containing a digital download code.

  • Digital or code-in-box
  • Eligible for current pre-order bonuses
  • Can add the Ultimate upgrade later

Rockstar says a Standard owner can purchase the digital Ultimate Edition Upgrade at any point after redeeming the Standard game code. That makes Standard the lower-commitment choice for anyone unsure about the extras.

What the Ultimate Edition Upgrade lists

Do not infer pay-to-win value from names alone

Vehicles, properties, styles and weapons are listed, but the official sources reviewed here do not quantify the time saved, economic advantage or long-term usefulness of the bundle.

Current pre-order and early-purchase bonuses

Digital pre-orders and purchases of either edition made before November 20, 2026 currently include the Vintage Vice City Pack: a '55 Vapid Stanier Sedan and Garage, outfits and hairstyles, and an exclusive weapon pattern. Digital pre-orders also include one month of GTA+ under Rockstar's current terms.

Physical pre-orders include a code for the game and the Vintage Vice City Pack. Rockstar's support breakdown does not list the GTA+ month under physical pre-order contents.

Pre-loadNov 12, local midnight

Possible after the retail code is received and redeemed.

“Physical” means code in a box, not a disc

The retail Standard Edition contains a code used to download the game. No game disc is included. Retail copies are expected to ship or become available for pickup from November 12, which is intended to support pre-loading before launch.

This difference matters for collectors, slow connections and resale expectations. A box does not remove the download requirement, and a redeemed digital code is not the same product behavior as a transferable disc.

Which GTA 6 edition should you buy?

  1. 01
Buy Standard for the game itself

It contains Grand Theft Auto VI and leaves the upgrade available later.

  2. 02
Buy Ultimate only for named extras you actually want

The bundle is a list of story-linked items, not evidence of additional story chapters.

  3. 03
Avoid the retail box if you expect a disc

Rockstar explicitly says the box contains a download code and no disc.

  4. 04
    Do not import blindly

The code region needs to match the platform account region. Use a retailer in the country of that account where possible.

Five checks before payment

  • Your console is PS5 or Xbox Series X|S.
  • The store or code region matches the region of your console account.
  • You understand whether the listing is Standard, Ultimate or an upgrade only.
  • You know the retail box has no disc and still requires a download.
  • You re-check current price, stock and bonus terms on the exact store page.

Prices and retailer availability vary by country, so this page does not publish one supposedly universal price.
