Minecraft Netherite Upgrade Guide: Debris, Template and Smithing Table

Separate the three gates

A current Netherite upgrade needs three separate things: Ancient Debris for scraps, gold for the ingot, and the Netherite Upgrade Smithing Template found in bastion remnants. Diamond equipment remains the item being upgraded.

If the Smithing Table output is empty, identify which of those three inputs is missing before mining more debris. An old two-slot recipe is not evidence that the current table is broken.

Mine debris without turning one blast into a wipe

Mojang's official debris guide describes long tunnels around Y 11, 12 or 15 and also documents bed mining. A bed explodes in the Nether, so place it at the tunnel end, shelter behind a solid block and expect lava pockets.

Start at full health and hunger, wear strong armor, bring fire resistance when available and expose only a small area per blast. Ancient Debris is rare; this guide does not convert those example levels into a guaranteed hourly yield.

Recover and preserve the template

Mojang's current bastion article identifies Netherite Upgrade Smithing Templates as bastion-remnant loot. Bastions are hostile structures, so mark the exit, secure a return route and open one section at a time.

Do not carry every ingot and finished diamond item into the bastion. Recover the template first, return it to safe storage, and only then assemble the upgrade inputs.

Smith the item and diagnose failure

Place the Netherite Upgrade template, the diamond tool or armor piece, and one Netherite Ingot into the Smithing Table and inspect the preview. Mojang's Netherite material guidance says an upgrade preserves durability state, enchantments and custom names.

If no output appears, confirm that the item is diamond, the template is the Netherite Upgrade type rather than an armor trim, and the ingot is in the material slot. If a copied tutorial shows only item plus ingot, it predates the template-era interface.
