Do this first
- 01Complete the opening chapter before roaming widely.
- 02Create a manual save before experiments or major purchases.
- 03Learn weapon-wheel and item-wheel placement in a safe area.
- 04Keep food, medicine, ammunition and a spare outfit on the horse.
- 05Unlock camp fast travel only when long return trips become the real bottleneck.
Stabilize before you explore
The opening teaches movement, aiming, horse handling and camp life under controlled pressure. Finish that sequence before treating the whole map as an efficient checklist.
Make a manual save after reaching a stable free-roam point. Autosaves help, but a deliberate save gives you a clean boundary before a robbery, expensive purchase or unfamiliar encounter.
Use the wheels as inventory, not panic menus
Practice opening the weapon and item wheels while no enemy is attacking. Confirm where food, medicine, Dead Eye items and long guns actually sit before a fight starts.
Rockstar's quick tips also document faster looting by holding the action button. Use it after the area is secure; speed does not replace checking for witnesses or incoming enemies.

Make the horse your mobile loadout
Keep a useful long gun, ammunition, restorative items and a weather-appropriate spare outfit available from the horse. Check the saddle before riding far from camp.
If Arthur's hat is lost, Rockstar says it can be recovered from the horse wheel. A missing hat is not a reason to reload an otherwise good save.
Unlock travel for a proven need
Rockstar's Title Update 1.15 notes state that Story Mode fast travel can be used from a player camp after the camp upgrade is purchased. That makes camp upgrades a route decision rather than decoration.
Use cinematic-camera waypoint travel only on a clear route and stay alert for interruptions. Fast movement reduces repetition; it does not make the world risk-free.
