Do this first
- 01Choose one target and check the intended weapon before leaving.
- 02Carry ammunition, food and medicine and keep horse cargo space free.
- 03Observe the animal before committing to the shot.
- 04Stow the pelt or carcass and mark the intended buyer before detouring.
- 05If a legendary pelt is lost, wait in-game and check the Trapper instead of replaying immediately.
Turn the trip into a route
A hunting run has four separate jobs: reach the area, identify the target, make the cleanest shot available, and deliver what the horse can carry. Decide the buyer and return route before taking on extra cargo.
Do not pack every weapon. Confirm the target and take the tool you can control reliably, plus enough ammunition and restorative supplies to survive an interrupted return.
Observe before firing
Use the game's observation and tracking tools to confirm the animal and approach. Rushing a shot can create a long chase, damage the result or leave Arthur in a bad position against terrain and predators.
If conditions are poor, reposition. A short delay is cheaper than carrying the wrong result across the map.

Protect the return trip
Stow the pelt or carcass, then avoid unrelated fights and steep shortcuts. A loaded horse changes the cost of every detour.
Make a manual save before a long sale route when the game permits it. The save is a recovery boundary, not a promise that every dynamic encounter will replay identically.
Recover a lost legendary pelt correctly
Rockstar's quick tips state that losing a legendary pelt does not permanently block its special crafting material. After enough in-game time, the material is delivered to the Trapper.
The tradeoff matters: Rockstar says you do not receive the sale money. Check the Trapper after time has passed before repeating a long hunt solely because the pelt disappeared.
