What happened
CD PROJEKT RED changed The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered from a scheduled release to available now on September 29. The studio describes it as a free upgrade for existing owners and includes Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine.
The accompanying official change list covers visual and performance work, a rebuilt three-rank skill tree, equipment appearance reforging, monster-behavior and movement changes, accessibility options, cross-platform mod support and platform-specific features.
The practical change: Back up the save, claim the upgrade inside the same platform ecosystem, keep the original install and rebuild the reset skill tree before resuming combat.
What is confirmed
- The named release platforms are GOG, Steam, Epic Games Store, Battle.net, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2.
- The launch notice says the Remastered update includes Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine for owners of the game.
- The new skill tree uses prerequisites and three ranks per skill; CD PROJEKT RED says existing skill points are reset because of the change.
- Equipment appearance can be changed through Reforge at Yoana or Hattori without changing item stats, once appearances are unlocked.
- The Switch 2 edition supports touch input, HDR, motion controls, mouse-sensor schemes and gyroscope aiming within the official platform boundaries.
- Nintendo's UK listing states that Remastered is a separate 42.3 GB download with its own Home-menu icon.
What this means for players
Existing builds need a deliberate review because the skill tree and skill values changed and the upgrade resets available skill points; copying an old screenshot is not a reliable respec plan.
Switch 2 owners should plan for a second application and its storage requirement. A separate icon is not evidence that saves, settings or ownership failed to carry; verify each layer before deleting the original app.
Cross-platform mod support does not guarantee that every old PC mod is compatible with the Remastered build. Start clean and add mods back only after their current compatibility is confirmed.
What is still unconfirmed
The checked launch pages do not guarantee that every regional store exposes the same claim flow, that every older mod works, or that trophies and platform achievements transfer identically. Nintendo's 42.3 GB and Home-menu wording is a UK/Europe store boundary and is not extrapolated to every region.
What to do next
- 01Open the official store for the platform ecosystem where you already own the game and verify that the Remastered upgrade is offered without a new purchase.
- 02Back up the current save, confirm the source file in Cross Progression if you use it, and keep the original installation until a Remastered save loads and reloads successfully.
- 03On Switch 2, reserve at least the listed 42.3 GB and look for the separate Remastered Home-menu icon instead of waiting for the original Switch icon to transform.
- 04Open the reset skill tree before combat, rebuild prerequisites deliberately and test one encounter before restoring a full build from memory.
