Direct answer
Use one short loop: catch a manageable creature, finish it safely, sell it, buy one useful upgrade, then complete the island's quests before attempting its boss. Do not spend the whole first wallet on an untested weapon.
Official facts come from Dazed Games, the Steam store and developer patch notes. Exact catch rates, spawn tables, prices and damage values are omitted when the current official material does not publish them.
Quick route
- 01Learn one reliable cast-and-finish sequence on a small creature.
- 02Sell the catch and buy one tool that solves the next problem.
- 03Complete the current island's quests before chasing rare variants.
- 04Enter the boss with money spent, a tested weapon and a recovery plan.
The actual progression loop
The official store description is unusually direct: fish, kill and sell creatures; use the proceeds to buy better gear and weapons; complete quests and defeat bosses to reach new islands. Treat those verbs as the order of operations, not six unrelated activities.
Your first goal is therefore repeatability. A modest catch you can land and sell consistently is more valuable than a rare target that consumes all of your time, ammunition or health.
- Catch something you can control.
- Finish it without wasting the whole loadout.
- Sell before a risky expedition.
- Upgrade for the next obstacle, not for novelty.
Buying the first upgrades
The game begins without equipment, so early money has high leverage. Test a purchase against one clear job: landing a catch, finishing a tough creature, controlling a group or surviving the route back.
Keep enough cash or usable gear to recover from a failed experiment. A fun weapon can still be a bad first purchase if it leaves no answer for the island objective.
Solo and co-op discipline
The Steam page presents How to Fish as a physics-based game for one to four players, while Patch 1.0.4 later added support for lobbies of up to eight. In a group, assign jobs informally: one player controls the catch, one finishes threats, and one protects or revives teammates.
Do not scatter across the island with shared progress unclear. Regroup before selling, starting a boss or triggering travel so every player knows which objective is next.
Before the first boss
Spend carried value, equip the tool you have actually tested and agree on a revive plan. The release trailer shows that friends can revive a fallen player, but the same footage also states that respawning is unavailable during a boss fight.
If the attempt collapses immediately, change one thing: difficulty, weapon role, spacing or team assignment. Changing the entire loadout hides the reason the next attempt succeeds or fails.
Official release trailer
The trailer confirms the co-op tone, physics-driven catches, weapons, boss encounters and revives. Treat footage as visual context; the current patch notes override early-build balance or interface details.
