Direct answer
Deflect a readable committed strike, answer with a short punish, then absorb released souls only when the space is safe. Use evasion against attacks you cannot read yet and treat Issen as a precision reward—not a command to gamble on every swing.

Quick steps
- 01Watch one complete enemy string before trying to deflect its final committed hit.
- 02Take one controlled counterattack, then reset before a follow-up can start.
- 03Absorb released souls only after checking the nearest enemy and the exit angle.
- 04Use evasion or spacing for unknown red, grab or area attacks instead of inventing a universal counter.
- 05Test Issen timing on one repeated attack before transferring the cue to a boss.
Deflect first, extend later
Capcom describes deflection and evasion as core answers inside the game's swordplay. The safe learning loop is to isolate one visible strike, confirm the contact cue and take a short punish rather than converting every success into a long combination.
If the enemy continues after the blocked or deflected hit, that opening was not the end of the string. Return to defense and move the punish to a later cue.
Use souls without losing the exchange
The Oni Gauntlet absorbs souls released during combat. That creates a second decision after dealing damage: collect now, or keep position until the nearby threat is controlled.
The absorption animation and surrounding enemies matter more than a theoretical maximum pickup. Clear the immediate lane, face the remaining threat and collect from a position that still leaves an exit.
- Red souls are a resource, not a reason to ignore an incoming attack.
- A safe short collection beats a greedy full sweep that loses health.

Treat Issen as a measured precision tool
The official materials name Issen as a powerful sword technique linked to precise timing. They do not publish one universal frame count for every enemy and difficulty setting.
Build the timing from a single repeatable strike. If the cue changes with a weapon, enemy or difficulty option, keep the visual trigger and discard the copied count.
Failure diagnosis
If a deflect is early, stop watching the enemy's shoulder and follow the attacking edge as it begins moving forward. If it is late, reduce the counter plan to one hit so the next sequence is visible. If soul absorption keeps causing damage, clear space first and collect in shorter windows.
