Do this first
- 01Cut nearby trees and gather wood before the first evening.
- 02Craft a Work Bench, platforms or doors, and torches from wood and gel.
- 03Close a room with background walls, light, entry, table and chair.
- 04Use the housing query to test whether an NPC can move in.
- 05Explore in short trips with a return path and supplies before a boss fight.
Spend daylight on reusable basics
The official starter guide begins with the starting tools, nearby trees and a Work Bench. Wood becomes more than a wall: it enables basic stations, platforms and furniture. Gel from slimes combines with wood for torches.
Place a Work Bench where you can return to it. Store materials when possible and do not turn the first day into a one-way trip into an unlit cave.
Make housing valid, not merely enclosed
A decorative box is not automatically valid NPC housing. The official Wiki's House page documents the space, background walls, entrance, light source and comfort/flat-surface requirements. Use the game's housing query to check the finished room.
The Guide is useful for crafting information and can live in valid housing. If the room fails, check for missing walls, an invalid entry or furniture before building a second identical room.

Light the return path
Prepare torches and platforms for a short exploration loop. Mark the route back to shelter and preserve enough health to return before enemy pressure grows at night.
A safe surface shelter lets you sort a new resource or craft replacement tools between outings. The starter guide's advice is a sequence of tasks, not a requirement to defeat a boss before building a home.
Approach the first boss with evidence
Boss availability depends on world progress and conditions. Prepare a usable weapon, room to move and a recovery route; read the actual summoning or event prompt in your current version.
This page does not invent a fixed day-one boss schedule, exact damage or a universal arena size. Its job is to keep the first night survivable and the next attempt deliberate.
