Direct answer

Valheim 1.0 and the Deep North are live as of September 9, 2026. Update the game, back up the world and character, disable or update unsupported mods, then decide whether you want the cleanest experience in a new world or a faster continuation in an old one. Old saves remain usable, but Deep North terrain and fixed content generate correctly only in territory that has not already been explored.

Evidence boundary: Iron Gate confirms the release, the broad 1.0 additions and the save-generation rule. This guide deliberately avoids hidden-boss, recipe and drop spoilers that are not needed to make the first decision.

Do this first

  1. 01
Confirm the game reports version 1.0 before loading an important save.
  2. 02
Make a separate backup of the world and every character you plan to use.
  3. 03
Remove or update mods; Iron Gate does not provide official mod support or guarantee 1.0 compatibility.
  4. 04
Start a new world for the intended full journey, or continue only if the far north is still unexplored.
  5. 05
Treat the official launch notes as the baseline and discover recipes in-game instead of copying pre-release lists.

The update is live, not a preview

Iron Gate released Valheim 1.0 on September 9, 2026. The abbreviated notes name the Deep North as the new biome and list more than 40 weapons, four armour sets, two capes, two trinkets, more than 10 creatures, more than 80 build pieces, more than 30 crafting materials and more than 20 food items.

Those figures describe content categories, not a progression order. The same official notes also mention achievements, upgradeable pockets, a grappling hook, alternate versions of earlier biomes, new events and an engine upgrade.

Choose the world before sailing north

Iron Gate says existing worlds receive new content, but biome generation works properly only in areas that have not been explored. The broader official FAQ defines explored territory conservatively: fixed world content is not applied where a player has already been, including an area of roughly 500 metres around the visited ground.

If the edge of your map is still untouched, continuing can preserve a long-running base and character. If you have extensively scouted the northern rim, a new world is the reliable route. The studio recommends starting over for the best overall experience even though it does not require you to do so.

Prepare the save, not a speculative shopping list

Back up first, then update. Keep the backup outside the active save folder so a sync mistake cannot replace it. Load an important world only after you have decided whether the current mod set is safe to use.

The official 1.0 FAQ says saves remain where they were and can be continued. It also says Valheim has no official mod support and cannot guarantee that mods will work at launch. That makes a clean, unmodded first load the lower-risk test.

Use a spoiler-light first session

The launch notes expose major systems but hide detailed spoilers behind an explicit control. MonsterSnow follows that boundary here: verify the update, protect the save, confirm the world-generation choice, then let the game reveal recipes and encounters.

If your goal is a direct late-game continuation, travel only after confirming that the target north was not uncovered on the map. If the goal is the intended complete arc, create a fresh world and progress through the existing biomes before treating the Deep North as a standalone map.
