Valheim 1.0 Old Worlds: Save, Map and Mod Compatibility

Yes, old Valheim worlds and characters still work in 1.0. Check explored-area generation, mods, achievements, backups and cross-platform save limits before loading.

Direct answer

Yes—you can continue an old Valheim world and character in 1.0. Back them up before loading. If the Deep North was heavily explored, start a new world because new fixed content only generates in unexplored areas, including roughly 500 metres around visited ground. Test a copied save without mods. Do not treat crossplay as a save backup: Iron Gate only confirms Xbox-to-PC sync through the Microsoft Store; other platform pairs have no cross-platform save sync.

Can I keep this world?

Deep North not explored
Continue from a backup. New terrain and fixed content can still generate in untouched areas.
Deep North heavily explored
Start a new world. The update will not rebuild visited ground or the roughly 500-metre area around it.
Modded, hosted or cloud-synced
Test a copied save without mods. Official save support does not guarantee every mod or sync layer.
Achievements are the priority
Use a clean save. Tracking starts after 1.0, and cheat flags or some modifiers can block awards.

Evidence boundary: These are Iron Gate's published compatibility rules. They do not guarantee that every individual mod, hosting panel, cloud-sync conflict or corrupted pre-existing save will behave correctly.

Do this first

  1. 01
Copy the world and character saves before the first 1.0 load.
  2. 02
Record whether the far north was explored and how heavily the world depends on mods.
  3. 03
Use a clean unmodded load to test the save, preferably from a copy.
  4. 04
Keep the untouched original and one off-device copy until the converted world, character, inventory and host all pass a reload test.
  5. 05
Continue only if preserving the old base matters more than seeing every newly generated area.
  6. 06
Start fresh when the Deep North was already mapped or when you want the intended full progression and achievement run.

First 1.0 load: check the copy before risking the original

Iron Gate confirms that old saves remain usable, but it does not certify mods, cloud conflicts or previously explored Deep North terrain. Use a copied world and character as a rehearsal; leave the original untouched until these checks pass.

The world is missing after changing platform or storeSeparate crossplay from save sync. Iron Gate only confirms Xbox-to-PC access through the Microsoft Store; other platform pairs do not receive cross-platform save sync.Return to the source platform, preserve its local or cloud save, and verify a supported transfer path before writing new progress elsewhere.

This is a diagnostic sequence, not a promise that every damaged save can be repaired. The official 1.0 FAQ defines the world and achievement boundaries; the general FAQ explains the explored-area buffer.

Old saves are supported

Iron Gate's 1.0 FAQ says nothing removes the saves: old worlds and characters remain where the player left them and can continue after the update. Early Access owners also do not need to repurchase the game.

Supported continuation is not the same as a no-backup guarantee. Make a separate copy before the first load, especially when cloud sync, a dedicated host or mods can write to the same save.

  • Old saves remain available
  • A new world is recommended, not mandatory
  • Unexplored regions can receive new fixed content
  • Mods have no official compatibility guarantee

Explored terrain is the deciding factor

The special 1.0 FAQ says biome generation works properly only in territory that has not been explored. Iron Gate's general FAQ explains why: updates avoid changing visited ground and potentially damaging player-built structures.

The general rule includes a radius of about 500 metres around places a player has visited. A blank-looking sliver near a mapped coastline may therefore be less untouched than it appears. If you explored the northern edge extensively, use a fresh seed instead of assuming 1.0 will rebuild it.

Mods are a separate risk layer

Valheim does not provide official mod support. Iron Gate explicitly says it cannot guarantee that mods function at 1.0 and that consoles do not receive mod support or Steam Workshop integration for the release.

Disable mods before the first diagnostic load, update the mod framework and add extensions back one at a time only after their maintainers state compatibility. A successful title-screen launch does not prove that world objects, inventories and server saves are safe.

Crossplay is not cross-platform save backup

Iron Gate confirms gameplay crossplay across every release platform, but save synchronization is much narrower. Xbox saves can be accessed on PC when the PC version is launched from the Microsoft Store. The studio says there is no cross-platform save sync beyond that pairing.

Before changing platform, host or store version, identify where the current world and character are actually stored. Confirm that the destination can see a copied save before retiring the source device. A server appearing in the crossplay browser proves network compatibility, not that the local character or world file moved with the account.

  • Crossplay: players on supported platforms can join the same session.
  • Save sync: only the Xbox and Microsoft Store PC path is officially confirmed.
  • Dedicated server: the host world still needs its own verified backup.
  • Platform move: keep the source save until the destination passes a full reload.

Achievement tracking starts at 1.0

The 1.0 achievement system begins tracking after the update. Iron Gate's example says an old character must defeat Eikthyr again to receive an achievement tied to that kill, even if the character did so many times before.

Most developer commands permanently flag the current character and world against achievements; spawned items are marked, and picking one up can create a temporary cheated state until all such items are discarded. Some world modifiers can also block achievements. Use a clean save when achievements are the priority.

After Patch 1.0.15: duplicated ground and converted item stands

Iron Gate's September 18 Patch 1.0.15 fixes a duplicated-terrain problem that reduced performance. If a seam remains in a world affected before the fix, the studio says to deform the ground along it or walk in the snow there; the corrected terrain should now persist after reloading. First confirm that your platform has received 1.0.15, because the rollout takes several days even though crossplay remains available.

A separate 1.0 save-conversion bug could remove levels and variants from items on item or armour stands. Iron Gate says conversion is fixed from Patch 1.0.12 onward, but already lost item data is not restored automatically. One recovery option is to revert to the backup made at the first new-format load, which discards later world progress. The other is to copy that backup, move the affected items onto your character in the copied world, then return to the main world and replace the broken items. Keep the original and a second backup untouched while testing either route.

The same 1.0.15 post says a fix for items incorrectly marked as cheated is still planned for a future simultaneous cross-platform patch. Do not describe that fix as live or delete an important save on the assumption that it has shipped.

  • Duplicated terrain or slowdown: check the installed patch first, then test the seam on a copy.
  • Lost stand-item levels: weigh later world progress before restoring a first-load backup.
  • Incorrect cheated-item label: planned fix, not part of a confirmed 1.0.15 repair.
