Stardew Valley Ores and Bars Guide: Every Ore Use

See what Copper, Iron, Gold, Iridium and Radioactive Ore are for, when to smelt each one, which direct recipes consume raw ore and what to reserve before selling.

Direct answer: Keep ore until the next tool or machine project is funded. Copper, Iron, Gold, Iridium and Radioactive Bars each take 5 matching ore plus 1 Coal; raw ore is still needed for bombs and several specialist recipes, so do not smelt the entire stack. Early on, the practical order is Furnace, Pickaxe upgrades, farm machines and sprinklers—not shipping ore for small immediate cash.

Do this first

  1. 01
Choose the next tool, sprinkler or machine before spending the ore stack.
  2. 02
Reserve 20 Copper Ore and 25 Stone for the first Furnace blueprint.
  3. 03
Keep a small raw-ore stack for bombs and late-game recipes; smelt the rest in batches.
  4. 04
Count every bar as 5 ore plus 1 Coal before promising materials to several projects.
  5. 05
Sell only genuine surplus after upgrades, bundles, crafting and current quests are covered.

Every metal ore: source, smelting time and useful jobs

All five metal bars use the same 5 ore + 1 Coal ratio, but their mining zones, furnace time and best uses differ. The examples below prioritize permanent progression and high-repeat infrastructure rather than listing every decorative or tailoring recipe.

01

Copper Ore

Mines floors 2–39

Smelts in 30 in-game minutes. Raw ore makes the Furnace and Cherry Bombs; Copper Bars fund first tool upgrades and early machines such as the Tapper, Mayonnaise Machine, Cheese Press, Keg and basic Sprinkler.

Keep or spendKeep the first 20 raw ore for a Furnace, then build 5-bar tool batches. Selling at 5g each is usually weaker than unlocking tools and machines.

02

Iron Ore

Mines floors 41–79

Smelts in 2 in-game hours. Raw ore makes Bombs; Iron Bars fund steel tool upgrades, Quality Sprinklers, Kegs, Lightning Rods, Bee Houses and many fishing machines.

Keep or spendReserve bars for the Steel Pickaxe and the exact machines you use. Do not turn three Copper Bars into one Iron Bar unless access to iron is the real bottleneck.

03

Gold Ore

Mines floor 80+

Smelts in 5 in-game hours. Raw ore makes Mega Bombs; Gold Bars fund gold tools, Quality and Iridium Sprinklers, Oil Makers and Crystalariums.

Keep or spendSeparate a bomb budget from an infrastructure budget. Mega Bombs consume 4 raw ore, so mass crafting can quietly delay gold tools and sprinkler expansion.

04

Iridium Ore

Skull Cavern and advanced sources

Smelts in 8 in-game hours. Raw ore is used by the Deluxe Scarecrow and Warp Totem: Desert; Iridium Bars fund final tool upgrades, Iridium Sprinklers, Iridium Bands, Crystalariums and trinket reforging.

Keep or spendTreat early Iridium as a project material, not ordinary shipping stock. One remixed Boiler Room bundle can also ask for a raw ore.

05

Radioactive Ore

Dangerous Mines or Skull Cavern

Smelts in 9 hours 20 minutes. Raw ore makes Hyper Speed-Gro and Magic Bait; Radioactive Bars make Heavy Tappers and Hoppers and can be traded for a Galaxy Soul when the trader conditions are met.

Keep or spendThis is late-game material. Keep it raw when bait or fertilizer is the goal; smelt only against a chosen bar recipe or trade.

Decide between raw ore and a bar before loading the Furnace

The Furnace always converts 5 matching metal ore and 1 Coal into one bar. Copper finishes in 30 in-game minutes, Iron in 2 hours, Gold in 5 hours, Iridium in 8 hours and Radioactive in 9 hours 20 minutes.

Raw ore is not merely unfinished metal. Copper, Iron and Gold feed the three bomb sizes, while Iridium and Radioactive Ore have their own specialist recipes. Keep a labeled raw stack so automatic batch smelting does not consume the material needed for the next mine run.

  • Raw Copper: Furnace and Cherry Bombs.
  • Raw Iron: Bombs.
  • Raw Gold: Mega Bombs.
  • Raw Iridium: Deluxe Scarecrow and Warp Totem: Desert.
  • Raw Radioactive: Hyper Speed-Gro and Magic Bait.

Copper and Iron remove the first farm bottlenecks

The first 20 Copper Ore should stay raw until the Furnace is built. After that, five-bar batches turn into Copper tool upgrades. A Copper Pickaxe speeds the route through the early Mines, while Copper Bars also unlock high-repeat machines such as Tappers and animal-product processors.

Iron starts carrying the farm once the Mines reach the frozen floors. Five Iron Bars fund each steel tool upgrade, and individual bars appear in Quality Sprinklers, Kegs, Lightning Rods, Bee Houses and fishing equipment. Pick the next bottleneck first; a long recipe list is not a reason to craft everything.

  • Mining blocked by tougher rocks: save for the next Pickaxe tier.
  • Morning watering consumes the day: reserve Iron and Gold for Quality Sprinklers.
  • Oak Resin is ready and crops need processing: reserve one Copper Bar and one Iron Bar per Keg.

Gold and Iridium turn resources into scalable infrastructure

Gold Bars cover the third tool tier and bridge into both Quality and Iridium Sprinklers. They also appear in Oil Makers and Crystalariums, so a farm expanding crops, pigs or replicated gems can consume gold faster than the sell price suggests.

Iridium Bars are the final-tool and late-infrastructure material. A single Iridium Sprinkler uses one Iridium Bar together with a Gold Bar and Battery Pack, while an Iridium Band and Crystalarium need larger bar commitments. Reserve against one build plan rather than dividing a scarce first batch among several unfinished projects.

Radioactive Ore is a late-game choice, not a better Iridium

Radioactive Nodes appear only in the dangerous versions of the Mines or Skull Cavern, during the relevant Qi quest or after the difficulty toggle is unlocked and activated. It does not replace Iridium in ordinary tool upgrades.

Choose the form by the intended job: keep ore for Hyper Speed-Gro or Magic Bait; smelt bars for Heavy Tappers, Hoppers or the conditional Galaxy Soul trade. The long smelting time makes overnight furnace batches easier to manage than last-minute crafting.

Selling ore is the fallback, not the default plan

Ore and bars have shipping values, but early progression usually gains more from faster tools, automated watering and repeatable processing. Before selling, subtract the next five-bar upgrade, machine queue, active bundle and known quest from the chest total.

Do not use ore as a blind gift. Most villagers dislike or hate raw metal ore, and only a few reactions differ. A confirmed Gift Log entry is better evidence than assuming a valuable resource makes a valuable present.

  • Keep one chest row split into raw ore, finished bars and Coal.
  • Write the next project on a sign or chest label and reserve its exact bar count.
  • Ship surplus only after the reserve still survives the next tool and machine purchase.
